Project: Creating a home that anyone could live in.
This was the first Universal Design home built in
Tidewater, receiving awards in design in 1990 and
recognition by HUD six years later. It has since become the
prototype of many homes and the basis for instruction on
good home design in many university studies. Photographs
and explanations of design features can be found in
the Universal House
Gallery.

Project:
Creating a usable bathroom for a teenage foster
child.
Fourteen years old at the time of this project, Timothy had
Cerebral Palsy and used a wheelchair. He was classified
blind but had very low vision. He had poor muscular
strength, had limited arm movement, fused ankles, but was
quite proficient in using his electric chair. He lived with
his aged foster mother who found it very difficult to lift
him for his bath. There was only one bathroom in this small
house and Timothy's bedroom was adjacent to it. See the
difference Universal Design made in the lives of Timothy
and his foster mother.
